The World By Train…
I have always had the urge to travel, and a lifelong grand ambition has been to ‘travel the world!’ But having spent the last couple of summers trundling around Europe on a train that dream has evolved into travelling the world by train. I have become totally enthralled by exploring by train!
I absolutely love exploring and discovering new places, especially by train, you just get to see and experience so much! Train travel provides the opportunity to see a country in a very unique way. The world passes you by from the window, allowing you to see everything, nothing is hidden from you and it feels more authentic.
Over the years I have been lucky enough to have had a reasonable amount of opportunity to travel with my children. We’ve had some brilliant trips. But my sons no longer want to come on holiday with us. They have their own adventures to find. Which gives me the freedom to have a bash at achieving that dream. So now, my challenge is to see as much of the world as possible, by train.
When I left school I wanted to work in the travel industry because I thought that would be the best way to get the opportunity to head off and see the world. I started a travel course and ended up working for Stena Line, but that was as far as it went. I quickly realised that working in the travel industry is no guarantee of travel opportunities and the pay really isn’t that great. Far better to get a reasonably well paid job and travel in your spare time. The dream of working in the travel industry swiftly died, but the love of organising an independent trip remained. In particular finding a bargain!
So challenge 5 ‘The World by Train’ is for me to plan as many independent trips as possible, mostly by train, visiting places off the beaten track, away from the tourist trail. Documenting them and sharing my finds to help my readers create their own bespoke independent trips.
